Man charged with murder after pensioner, 73, dead from head injury at east London home

Police called to Russia Lane, Bethnal Green on Thursday - (Google Street View)

A man has been charged with murder after an elderly woman was killed at her home in east London.

Mizanur Rahman, 45, will appear at Thames Magistrates Court on Saturday after Sufia Khatun, 75, died from a serious head injury at the address on Russia Lane, Bethnal Green.

Metropolitan Police officers were called by the London Ambulance Service at 9pm on Thursday.

Sadly, despite the best effort of medical professionals, she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rahman, who was known to the victim, remains in custody over the “isolated” incident in Tower Hamlets.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “Her next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

“A post-mortem examination will take place in due course.”

Detective Chief Superintendent Brittany Clarke, who leads the Central East Command Unit, said: “Our team of officers and forensic specialists are working at pace to establish the full circumstances that led to this woman's tragic death.

“This is believed to be an isolated incident, with no wider risk to the general public. However, residents can expect to see an increased police presence in the area over the coming days.

“If you have any information, if you saw or heard anything suspicious in the area in the hours leading up to 9pm last night, please contact us to help with our enquiries.”

Anyone with information can call police via 101, quoting CAD 7726/14AUG, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
