First picture of murder victim Thomas Milne after targeted attack in close in Saracen Street in Glasgow

Police have launched a murder inquiry following the death of a 40-year-old man in Glasgow in a "targeted attack".

Officers received a report of an injured victim within a common close in Saracen Street, Possilpark , at around 5pm on Thursday.

Emergency services attended but Thomas Milne died at the scene.

Relatives have been informed and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

A post mortem examination has been carried out and officers have now launched a murder inquiry.

Police believe Thomas was set upon within the close outside his home in a targeted attack. Officers are now checking CCTV footage in the area as they try to track down those responsible for Thomas's death.

One Saracen Street shopkeeper told the Record: “There was a right commotion coming from the first floor of that block of flats.

“By teatime all of the shops were told to close and the police had arrived.

“I knew Tommy, he often came into the shop.

“I didn’t know him well but he always came across as a nice guy.

“It’s a shame, I like Possil but things like this happen all the time.”

Another local business owner said: “I’ve only been running this shop for three months and I feel scared working here now.

“There have been quite a few violent incidents recently.

“It has to stop.”

Another added said: “At around 6pm there were lots of police cars on the road.

“It went into lockdown, we were all told to shut up shop.

“This is just another day in Possil.”

Detective Inspector Ally Semple, Major Investigations Team, said: “Thomas has been the victim of a violent and targeted attack and it’s imperative we trace whoever is responsible for his murder.

“Extensive enquiries have been ongoing with specialist officers and forensics teams conducting examinations at the scene.

"I am appealing to local residents to contact us with any information they may have, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please do pass it on.

"A man has lost his life and his family and friends have been left in a state of shock at what has happened.

“I also urge anyone who was driving on Saracen Street around 5pm and has dash cam footage to contact police immediately.”

Anyone with information is asked to call detectives via 101, quoting incident number 2939 of 15 August, 2019. Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where information can be given anonymously.
