Detectives were today investigating the death of a pensioner found slumped with a head injury on a tree-lined street in north London.

The man in his seventies was given emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at the scene in Dalmeny Road, Tufnell Park, at 7.20pm yesterday.

An investigation has been opened to establish how the victim received his injuries, the Met said.

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and was being questioned in custody at a central London police station. The pensioner’s next of kin have been informed.

Neighbours today told of their shock at the death in their quiet street.

Iudica Martin, from the nearby Charlie Hotel, said: “There were lots of ambulances and emergency services there.

"It looked serious and we have all been wondering what happened there. To find out it’s a murder investigation is a shock. It’s a nice road.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or to remain anonymous Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
