Murder not ruled out in death of mother found in river near Byron Bay

The last confirmed sighting of Carley Metcalfe was in Lismore on November 4, 2017.

It has been almost two years since the body of 40-year-old Carley Metcalfe was found in a northern NSW river, prompting a magistrate to plead for information relating to the death.

An inquest into the unusual circumstances surrounding the mother of two's death will likely be held in March.

The coroner in charge of the inquest, Karen Stafford, used a directions hearing in Byron Bay today to call for more information on Ms Metcalfe's movements leading up to the discovery of her body on November 29, 2017.

"I'm calling for members of the public with any information about Carley Metcalfe's movements after November 4 to come forward," Ms Stafford said.

"It is now approaching the second anniversary of her death and her parents are desperate for answers."

No evidence of injury

The court heard the last confirmed sighting of Ms Metcalfe was at the Lismore Bus Station on November 3, 2017. She was believed to be heading north towards Mullumbimby.

The following day, police discovered her belongings, including a wallet with bank cards and a Medicare card, scattered on the railway platform at Mullumbimby.

Acquaintances told police they might have seen Ms Metcalfe in Mullumbimby in the week prior to her death, between November 20 and 25.

Ms Stafford said if the sighting was accurate, she would likely have stayed with, and had help from, friends or a friend prior to her body being discovered in the Brunswick River on November 29.

She said an autopsy report revealed Ms Metcalfe was unlikely to have consumed any drugs or alcohol prior to her death, and there was also no evidence of any injury.

The manner and cause of Ms Metcalfe's death are unknown, and the possibility she died as a result of homicide has not been excluded.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
