Murder investigation launched after woman found dead in cemetery

A murder investigation is underway after a woman's body was discovered in a cemetery in Lancashire.

Police were called to Accrington Cemetery on Saturday night.

It is understood the grim find was made by a member of the public.

The scene remains cordoned off while a 'lengthy and detailed examination' takes place.

On Sunday night, detectives said the person was yet to be identified.

The family of missing mum-of-two Lindsay Birbeck has been informed of the development.

The 47-year-old teaching assistant disappeared after leaving her home on Burnley Road in Accrington on August 12.

She has not been seen since.

Lancashire Police launched a search for Lindsay, appealing for witnesses, dash cam footage and CCTV - anything that could help officers piece together what happened to her.

Specialist resources including search dogs, as well as mountain rescue teams, were also drafted in to help.

In a statement released by the force, detectives said: "We are not in a position to confirm the woman’s identity at this stage and while the family of missing teaching assistant Lindsay Birbeck have been told of this latest development, we would ask once again that people do not speculate on social media as this could cause the family additional distress.

"A Home Office post mortem examination will now be carried out to try to establish the cause of death.

"Enquiries are continuing and we will continue to update you when we can."

A further statement on Monday afternoon confirmed a murder investigation was underway.

The body has not yet been identified and a further update is expected later today.
