A murder investigation has been launched after a 50-year-old woman was found dead in an east London block of flats, police said.

Officers said the woman was found just before New Year’s Eve, on December 30, at Salisbury House, Hobday Street, in Tower Hamlets, after “concerns were made for the welfare of the occupant”.

Police said at first the woman’s death was “deemed unexplained” at first, as the results of a post-mortem examination were being collected, but this later changed.

In a statement, police said: “A special post-mortem examination was held on Friday, 4 January at Poplar Public Mortuary with a provisional cause of death given as compression to the neck.

“No arrests have been made.

“Detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command (HMCC) are investigating.

“Enquiries are ongoing.”

The woman is still to be formally identified, police added.

Anyone with information has been urged to call the HMCC Incident Room on 0208345 3775.
