A murder investigation has been launched after a man assaulted in a Greater Manchester pub died on Saturday, more than a week after the attack.

Gavin Brown was rushed to hospital with serious injuries following what was described as a “violent incident” at the Melville Hotel in Stretford on 12 April.

The 29-year-old never regained consciousness and died eight days later, police said.

Three men, aged 52, 39 and 30, were previously arrested on suspicion of assault, but have since been released pending investigation.

Detective Inspector Terry Chatterton, of Greater Manchester Police, said: "Sadly the worst has happened and today Gavin lost his fight for life.

"My thoughts go out to his family and friends and we will continue to help them in whatever way we can, and get them the answers they deserve.

"Our investigation is ongoing and we are continuing to appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. Any information, no matter how small, could be vital to our investigation."

The initial incident at the Melville prompted a large response from emergency services with eight police vehicles, as well as a fire engine and three ambulances attending the scene.

Posting on its Facebook page, the pub said it would now remain closed over the Easter bank holiday weekend but was hoping to reopen on Tuesday.
