Murder investigation launched after body of man with gunshot wounds found at car on fire at M1 motorway

An investigation has been launched by gardai after the body of a man was found at a burning car in North Dublin.

The grim discovery was made last night on the Dublin to Belfast M1 motorway at J5, near Walshestown.

Gardai are understood to have found the body after responding to reports of a car on fire on the motorway.

Upon arrival, they discovered that the body beside the car.

It is believed that the man was shot several times and a murder investigation has been launched.

The scene has been preserved and a forensic examination is to be carried out this morning.

A garda spokesman said: "Gardaí at Balbriggan Co Dublin are investigating a fatal shooting incident which occurred at Rowans Little, Walshstown, Balbriggan, Co Dublin at approximately 11.20pm last night, Tuesday May 21 May 2019.

"Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to a car on fire at the above location and discovered a male (age unknown) with apparent gunshot wounds beside the car.

"The body of the man remains at the scene and the area is currently preserved pending an examination by Garda Crime Scene Examiners. Diversions are in place.

"Investigating Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information or anyone who may have witnessed this incident to contact the incident room at Balbriggan Garda Station on 01- 802 0510, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station."
