Murder investigation launched after body found in woodland

A murder investigation has been launched after a body was found in woodland.

Police were called around 5.25pm yesterday to reports of a body found in a wooded area off Parbold Hill.

The death is being treated as suspicious and an investigation is underway.

At this stage it is not known if the body is a man or woman.

A cause of death has yet to be established and a post mortem will be carried out in due course.

Police officers and a forensic team are currently at the scene and appear to be focusing their attention on a wooded area towards the back of the main field.

Police are also cordoning off two areas of field- one leading up towards Wrightington and a further field towards High Moore Lane.

A shocked passerby told the ECHO: “Nothing ever happens here, I’m shocked to see so many police cars here.”

Fire and Rescue are also at the scene.

Det Ch Insp Geoff Hurst, of Lancashire Police’s Force Major Investigation Team , said: “A murder inquiry is underway after a body was found in Parbold.

“At this stage it is not known if the body is a man or woman and enquiries are on-going to identify them.

“We are at the very early stages of our investigation and would appeal to anyone with information to come forward.

“Furthermore, if you have seen anyone acting suspiciously or any unusual behaviour in the area in recent days, please come forward.”

Today police officers and a forensic team are at the scene and appear to be focusing their attention on a wooded area towards the back of the main field.

Police are also cordoning off two areas of field- one leading up towards Wrightington and a further field towards High Moore Lane.
