Murder investigation into the death of newborn baby after mum took abortion drugs

A murder investigation is underway following the death of a newborn after a mum took abortion drugs posted to her.

Police in the Midlands are also probing another two cases including a pregnancy being terminated at 28 weeks — four weeks after the legal limit.

Inspectors at the Care Quality Commission have also identified a further seven cases as they look into an “escalating risk” with medical terminations at home.

In some cases the mums-to-be needed emergency hospital treatment, Sun Online reports.

The website also reports that two women died in the North West after early medical abortions in the last few weeks.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic the rule for the pills-by-post process were relaxed in April and thousands of women have safely undergone terminations at home.

Nigel Acheson, CQC’s Deputy Chief Inspector of Hospitals, told Mirror Online: “We are aware of a small number of serious incidents where woman who have accessed early medical abortion have suffered complications.

"We have followed up directly with the providers concerned, and continue to work closely with NHS England and Improvement, the Department of Health and Social Care and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists to ensure the appropriate safeguards are in place to protect woman accessing this service."

Under the new relaxed laws, which end in 2022, expectant women can have a termination at home until they are 10-weeks pregnant.

To do so they much have a telephone or video consultation with a doctor who will issue a prescription.

A kit containing the termination pills will be posted to the patient's home.

It will contain one tablet mifepristone, six tablets of misoprostol, a pregnancy test, codeine (only if it is suitable for the woman) and if the patient has requested a progestogen only contraceptive pills it will be included.

Mirror Online has contacted the police forces that cover the Midlands area for a comment.
