Murder investigation as man dies after 'appalling act' of street violence

A murder investigation has been launched over the death of a man found in the street after suffering critical injuries.

Officers from Merseyside Police were called to Monfa Road in Bootle shortly before 1.55am on Monday, May 6 to a man found critically injured after 'reports of an altercation'.

Emergency services were scrambled to the scene in the early hours and the man, believed to be in his 30s, was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

A large police cordon remains in place on Monfa Road this morning while officers from Merseyside Police continue to carry out enquiries.

Officers arrested a 41-year-old man from Bootle at the scene on suspicion of murder. He was taken to a police station in Merseyside to be interviewed.

Speaking to the ECHO , a spokesman for the force was unable to confirm the nature of the man's injuries or any further details surrounding the incident at this point.

The victim's next of kin have been informed but enquiries are still ongoing to formally identify him. A Home Office post mortem examination will take place to establish the cause of death.

Detective Chief Inspector Gayle Rooney said: “We’re currently in the very early stages of the investigation into this incident and it is vital that anyone with information that could assist our enquiries gets in touch.

“This is a truly shocking crime which has occurred in a residential area, and a man has tragically lost his life in an appalling act of violence.

“You may have witnessed part of the incident or suspicious behaviour in the area and any information, no matter how small, may prove vital to our investigation.

“Likewise, if you have any CCTV or dashcam footage, please contact us.”

Forensic, house-to-house and CCTV enquiries are ongoing and officers will remain in the area to provide reassurance to the community and to gather information.
