Murder investigation as body of 67-year-old woman found in a house and cops search for man

A police cordon is in place after the body of 67-year-old woman found in a house in Levenshulme.

A murder investigation was launched after the grim discovery was made on Westminster Street at around 8.30pm on Thursday (May 7).

GMP confirmed a 67-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers are now searching for a Leroy Panton, 40, who is believed to have lived at the same address as the deceased.

They said they are becoming 'increasingly concerned' for his welfare and urged anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.

Detective Inspector Benjamin Cottam, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a woman has sadly lost her life and I want to extend my sincere condolences to her family and friends.

"Our specialist officers are currently supporting the woman’s family at this incredibly difficult time.

“I would like to reassure the public that this is being treated as an isolated incident, and we have an increased police presence in the Manchester area while we gain a fuller understanding of exactly what has taken place.

“Our dedicated team of detectives are working tirelessly to establish the full circumstances surrounding this tragic death.

GMP were called to Westminster Street at 8.30pm on Thursday night (ASP)

“If you have any information at all, no matter how insignificant you feel it may be, please contact police immediately.

"Even the smallest piece of information could be vital in helping officers to complete their enquiries.”

A police cordon remained in place outside a house on Westminster Street on Friday evening (May 8).

Officers were picture guarding a house.

A police car was also parked up on the road.

GMP confirmed that no arrests have been made so far.
