A murder investigation has been launched after an elderly man was stabbed to death in east London, with a two-year-old boy and 11-year-old girl also taken to hospital with stab wounds.

Another boy, aged 13, was discovered at the scene of the incident at Huddleston Close in Tower Hamlets on Sunday evening, and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

All three children are in a stable condition but the man was pronounced dead shortly after 10pm on Sunday.

A 31-year-old man, who was found with self-inflicted injuries, was arrested on suspicion of murder. The Metropolitan police have yet to disclose whether there is any relationship between any of the victims or with the suspect.

After receiving treatment for his injuries at an east London hospital, the suspect is expected to be discharged and taken to a police station for questioning.

Formal identification of the victim and a postmortem will follow. His next of kin has been informed, police said.

Detectives from the homicide and major crime command are investigating, and Scotland Yard said it was keeping an open mind about the motive for the attack, but added that it was not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.
