Murder hunt after body of man, 55, 'beaten to death' is found at allotments

The body of a 55-year-old man who was reportedly beaten to death has been found on an allotment site.

Andrew Jackson was discovered by officers after suffering injuries that would "suggest" he had been assaulted.

A murder investigation has been launched following the grim discovery on Sunday at around 10am in Shirebrook, Derby.

Detective Inspector Chris Marriott appealing for anyone who heard a noise or a disturbance around the Prospect Drive area between 10.30pm on Saturday  January 25, and 2am the next day to come forward to Derbyshire police, the Derby Telegraph reported.

He said: "Inquiries have identified that several people were in Prospect Drive, Central Drive and surrounding streets between those times and we are asking them to come forward so we can speak to them as part of our investigation."

People in the area have paid tribute to Mr Jackson.

A staff member at a nearby shop said: “He was a really lovely bloke, very well spoken, and he never had a bad word to say about anyone.

"He used to come in here a few times a week to buy beer depending on how much money he had.

“He lived in the caravan in the allotment. His name was Andy but everyone used to call him Cat Man because he had cats in his caravan.”

A local resident said: "It is a shock, of course. I knew the person who was attacked. He looked more than 50 years old, but I’m not sure exactly.

“I saw the police there at around 10pm or 11pm. I did not know what had happened, but in the allotment yard there is a caravan with two of its windows broken.

“The person that was killed lived in that caravan as far as I know. He spent a lot of time there.

“Time passes and now we understand that it was a murder. The tent that they put up, when that goes up you know it’s serious.”

DI Marriott also wants to hear from anyone who lives in the area who might have CCTV or dash cam footage.

Anyone with any information should call police on 101 quoting reference number 20049022 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
