A Myanmar national suspected of killing and dismembering his wife, whose body was found stuffed inside a plastic box at an apartment in Bangkok, has been arrested in Yangon.
Aung Pyae, 36, a cook at a pub near Phetchaburi Road, was apprehended following a joint operation between Thai and Myanmar authorities, police said on Saturday.
Pol Col Sakkaya Saengwan, deputy commander of Metropolitan Police Division 1, will travel to Mae Sot district in Tak province to take custody of the suspect at the immigration checkpoint before bringing him back to Thailand for legal proceedings.
The arrest followed the discovery of the body of Aye Aye Nwe, 34, a Myanmar national who worked as a bar waitress in the Klong Toey area of Bangkok. Her dismembered remains were found stuffed inside a plastic storage box left on the rear balcony of a rented room on Ratchaprarop Soi 14 in Ratchathewi district shortly after midnight on Friday.
Police identified the victim’s husband as the prime suspect. Security camera video showed him leaving the scene and later hiring a passenger van, which took him from Bangkok to Mae Sot in an apparent attempt to flee across the border into Myanmar.
Authorities believed the killing stemmed from jealousy after the suspect accused his wife of having a new partner.
Investigators from the Din Daeng police station subsequently secured an arrest warrant from the Criminal Court, charging Aung Pyae with premeditated murder and concealing, moving or destroying a body or body parts to conceal the cause of death.
Before the grisly discovery, police at the Din Daeng station were alerted at 3.30am on Friday about a suspicious object and a foul odour coming from an apartment on Ratchaprarop Soi 14.
Police and rescue volunteers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation were dispatched to investigate.
Inside the room, they found a large plastic box containing the dismembered remains of a woman. A preliminary examination found that the victim’s head and some other body parts were missing.
Police suspect the suspect disposed of them elsewhere. Forensic officers collected fingerprints, DNA samples and other evidence from the scene.
