Murder conspiracy arrest after two drinkers shot in Merseyside pub

A second man has been arrested following the shooting of two men in a pub four days ago.

The firearms discharge happened inside the Market Tavern in Kirkby when attackers arrived at the boozer on pedal cycles before firing off a hail of bullets.

One man, 31, suffered a serious chest injury, while the 34-year-old sustained a wound to his arm during the incident on Monday at around 6.45pm.

The younger man is understood to have been t he target for the shooting.

This morning, police said they had arrested a 36-year-old man from Kirkby on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.

He will be quizzed at a police station on Merseyside.

It follows an earlier arrest of a 37-year-old man, from St Helens, who is being probed on suspicion of attempted murder and possession of a firearm.

Detectives have been placed on high alert during the past week with four separate shootings in Merseyside - two in Kirkby, one in Dovecot and another in Birkenhead.

Earlier this week, officers described to the ECHO how the gunmen at the Market Tavern arrived with masks or snoods over their faces, and walked in single file before the attack.

The motive behind the shooting is almost certainly a drug-dealing turf war, police said.

Forty-five minutes before the attack, a shot was fired at a house in Delfby Crescent, Southdene, described as a "stone's throw" away from the pub.

A bullet was found lodged in the porch, with one woman inside the house at the time.

The offenders for that shooting were possibly sat in a dark-coloured car, that was later seen driving towards Park Brow Drive.

The woman is said to be cooperating with police, and there is no known criminality linked to that property.

Officers who attended Market Tavern took verbal accounts from some eyewitnesses, but others declined to comment for fear of possible reprisals.

The pub attack was over in less than a minute, and involved the attackers firing from close range.

Detective Superintendent Richie Salter said the shootings in the Market Tavern and on Delfby Crescent were possibly linked, although there is not thought to be any direct forensic connection at this point.

On Sunday night, a 40-year-old woman was shot in the arm as she sat in a parked VW Golf on Aldwark Road in Dovecot.

Her terrified four-year-old daughter cowered in the back of the car as bullets were discharged, shattering the back windscreen of the vehicle.

The woman managed to drive away from the shooting for a short distance before pulling up outside a relative's house on Grovehurst Avenue.

Police have been deploying heightened stop and search powers in Kirkby, allowing officers to interrogate people without any suspicion.
