A fight at a child's first birthday celebration ended in two deaths and has landed the accused stabber with double murder charges.

Emergency services were called to a home at Clyde North, in Melbourne's outer southeast, following reports of an altercation on the night of January 16.

About 20 people had been at a birthday party at the home when an argument began and turned into a brawl that spilled into the street, police said at the time.

Two men, aged 23 and 54, were found with stab wounds to their upper body.

They were treated by paramedics but both died at the scene.

A 30-year-old homeless accused was arrested in Doveton, in Melbourne's southeast, on Tuesday before he was interviewed and charged with two counts of murder.

Police said the people involved were known to each other.

The accused man has been remanded in custody and will appear in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
