Murder charge laid over death of firefighter on road near Singleton

Victim: New Zealand man Ian Pullen, 43, died in 2018 at Glenridding, near Singleton.

POLICE have charged a man with murder over the death of a firefighter in the Hunter two years ago.

Ian Pullen, 43, was found on Carrington Street at Glenridding in the early hours of September 2019 2018.

The New Zealand firefighter, 43, had been in the Hunter to help fight bushfires around the region.

Police established Strike Force Awabakil to examine how he died.

On Wednesday morning they charged a 29-year-old man at Newcastle Police Station.

The man is accused of murder, dangerous driving occasioning death and fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death.

He was remanded into custody and is due to face Newcastle Local Court.

The charges come after a series of appeals by police in a bid to find the vehicle that allegedly struck Mr Pullen, including a $350,000 reward announced last year.

His mother Gill and brother Guy travelled to Newcastle in 2019 to appeal for information that could bring answers for the family.

"Up until 12 months ago, I had three sons," Mrs Pullen said at the time.

"Ian was a caring husband, he had three beautiful children and he was a man who cared so much for other people that he would put his life at risk to come over and fight fires here in Australia."

Mr Pullen and his wife Vicki.
