A young man accused of murder will remain in custody after the body of a woman believed to be his mother was found with stab wounds.

It was one of two alleged murders in the Newcastle region within eight hours, with a man also dying from stab wounds after an unrelated incident in the suburb of Argenton, near Lake Macquarie, early on Sunday.

In the first incident, emergency services were called to Windale, southwest of Newcastle, following reports of a concern for welfare shortly after 8pm on Saturday.

Police found the body of a woman believed to be in her 40s outside the home after searching the property.

"Unfortunately, despite best efforts of NSW paramedics, she was unable to be revived," Superintendent Tracy Chapman said on Sunday.

Blaise McIntyre, 25, was arrested at the scene and taken to Belmont police station, where he was charged with one count of domestic violence-related murder.

The charged man is believed to be the alleged victim's son, Supt Chapman said.

"The female did have multiple injuries, stab wounds to both her body and her face," she said.

A knife found at the scene had been seized and would undergo forensic examination.

McIntyre made some comments to police that would form part of the case against him, Supt Chapman said.

There were no reports of previous domestic violence incidents between the man and woman, she said.

The senior officer described family violence as a "scourge" and a "whole-of-society issue".

McIntyre did not apply for release in a NSW bail court on Sunday and bail was formally refused.

He is due to appear in Newcastle Local Court on June 17.

In the second incident, emergency services were called to a unit in Argenton following reports of an assault shortly after 4am on Sunday.

Police found a man aged in his 30s with critical injuries from a stabbing attack. He died at the scene.

Six to eight males wearing dark clothing and face coverings had forced entry to the unit and assaulted the man before fleeing, Supt Chapman said.

"It's my understanding that the incident was very quick," she said.

The attackers were yet to be found.
