A man has been charged with murder after an elderly man was assaulted in his home and later died in hospital.

Police were called to a Girards Hill home in Lismore about 12.45pm on September 30 to find the 89-year-old home owner suffering critical head injuries.

Paramedics treated the man at the scene before he was taken to Lismore Base Hospital with multiple fractures, where he died a week later.

Alexander Repin, 46, was arrested at the time of the incident and charged. Police have now upgraded the charge to murder.

He also faces two charges of causing grievously bodily harm and one of being armed with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He faced Lismore Local Court on Wednesday and did not apply for bail.
