The former boyfriend of missing Melbourne woman Maryam Hamka has been charged with her murder.

Toby Loughnane, 41, has been charged with one count of murder over the disappearance of his on-and-off-again partner Ms Hamka earlier this year.

The 36-year-old was last seen leaving a Brunswick supermarket on April 10. She told family she was going to visit a friend in Brighton.

Loughnane will face Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday charged with her murder. The Brighton man is already in custody charged with assaulting her sometime between December 1 last year and April 15 when she was reported missing.

Ms Hamka's body has not been located and the police investigation into her disappearance remains ongoing.

Police have also renewed their appeal for information about a red 2015 Mazda 3 hatchback with distinctive damage to the front left guard.

The car has been seized but investigators are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen it between April 13 and 15.

It is believed to have made a number of trips to and from the Brighton area during the two-day period with a man behind the wheel.
