Murder charge after car hits boy driving moped in Orpington

A man has been charged with murder after a 16-year-old died after being knocked off his moped.

Victim, Tafari Thompson-Mintah, 16, was riding a moped along Sevenoaks Way in St Paul’s Cray when he was hit by a car at around 3.30pm on Monday.

Officers, paramedics and London’s Air Ambulance attended but despite the efforts of emergency services, the teenager was pronounced dead.

Joseph Barnes, 40, of no fixed abode was arrested on October 12 on suspicion of murder.

He was later charged on Saturday and will appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Tafari’s family have been updated with this development and continue to be supported by officers.

Previously, detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, who is leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts are with Tafari’s family at this incredibly difficult time. We will continue to support them as our investigation progresses.”
