Murder arrest after woman found dead in flat

A man was arrested on suspicion of murder after a woman was found dead in a flat.

Merseyside Police rushed to Vittoria Close in Birkenhead at around 7.15pm on Thursday, May 12, following reports of a woman's body being found. Once police entered a flat block on the road, officers found the body of a woman in her 60s.

Paramedics attended and she was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s next of kin were informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Officers arrested a 51-year-old man, who is known to the victim, on suspicion of murder.

Dad becomes boss of multimillion pound company after going for brew with Tesco CEO

A dad who left school at 16 with only a few GCSEs told how he started a multimillion pound company after sending a letter to the CEO of Tesco.

As a teenager growing up in Aigburth, Mike Welch said he wasn't particularly academic and struggled to engage with school. After getting his first job as a tyre fitter in Birkenhead at the age of 16, Mike was inspired to set up his own business from his parent's home - but little did he know it would be a decision that would shape the next 27 years of his career.

The soon to be dad-of-three has now swapped Liverpool for Miami and is the CEO of Tirebuyer.com - one of America's biggest online tyre retailers with an estimated turnover of more than $100m. Mike, who was adopted as a baby, told the ECHO how it all started back in the early days of the internet when he sent a letter to the CEO of Tesco, Liverpool-born Sir Terry Leahy asking if he had the time for a cup of tea and a chat.

Catcalling thug knocked out woman who stood up to him

A catcalling thug who knocked a woman out after she confronted him over his "disgraceful" comments was jailed.

Adam Higginson and another man made Maeve Brooks feel intimidated and frightened when she was walking home alone. But she decided to stand up to the drunken friends.

On Thursday, May 12, Liverpool Crown Court heard they continued taunting her until she aimed a kick at Higginson. After kicking her back, Higginson punched her to the head, leaving the victim with a permanent scar.
