Murder arrest after body of man found in alleyway by passerby

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a a body was found in an alleyway in Kirkdale.

Emergency services rushed to the Stanley Road area of Kirkdale, at around 1pm on September 22, to reports of a man's body being found in an alleyway.

The man, who was pronounced dead at the scene was found in an alleyway between Harebell Street and Woodbine Street by a member of the public.

The man's cause of death, age or identity are not yet known.

Police quickly sealed off Woodbine Street, Harebell Street and Reading Street after arriving at the scene.

A 22-year-old man from Kirkdale has since been arrested on suspicion of murder and taken into custody for questioning.

Detective Inspector Jennie Beck said: “We are in the early stages of our investigation into the death of a man in Kirkdale this afternoon and we would appeal for anyone with any information to come forward.

“We understand the shock this will have caused within the local community and are doing all we can to establish the circumstances."

Enquiries are ongoing to formally identify the victim and notify his next of kin.

One woman, who lives in the area said police 'swarmed' the area within a matter of minutes.

She told The ECHO: "I had just gone in the house for about five minutes and came back out to see police everywhere. I've never seen this many police cars in my life."

Multiple police cars, matrix vans and forensic officers were at the scene, with an ambulance attending at around 8pm.

A section of the pavement on Stanley Road was also cordoned off by police with forensics seen putting down evidence markers and taking pictures.

CCTV, house-to-house and forensic enquiries are also being carried out in the local area.

DI Beck continued: “We are carrying out a number of witness and CCTV enquiries tonight to establish what has taken place and so if you have seen anything or anyone suspicious in the Kirkdale area recently then please let us know and we will take action.

“Similarly if you were driving in the area and have any dashcam footage then please review it and let us know if you see anything. Any information you hold could be vital to our enquiries.”
