Murder arrest after body of 88-year-old woman found in back garden

A man was arrested after the body of a pensioner was found lying in the back garden of a house.

Emergency services were called to Kenilworth Road in Ainsdale on Monday at around 7.20pm to report of concern for the safety of an 88-year-old woman.

Police officers who went to the house gardens out a search at the property and made the grim discovery when looking around the garden.

The woman has not yet been formally identified but Merseyside Police have confirmed that a man was arrested on suspicion of murder.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We are investigating following the discovery of a woman’s body in Ainsdale today (Tuesday 30 July 2019).

"Officers attended a house in Kenilworth Road following reports of concern for the safety of an 88-year-old woman.

"Officers were called at 7.20pm last night, Monday 29 July and a search of the back garden was carried out, during which a woman’s body was found.

"She has yet to be formally identified and officers are working to contact next of kin."

At the scene on Kenilworth Road a cordon had been put in place around the property as forensic officers were seen coming and going from the house.

A large forensic tent had been erected in the back garden while six police cars were parked on the street.

The woman's death is currently being treated as unexplained and a Home Office Post Mortem will take place to establish whether the woman died of natural causes or not.

A 58-year-old man from Ainsdale was arrested on suspicion of murder. He has subsequently been released under investigation and detained under the Mental Health Act.

An investigation to establish the full circumstances of the incident has now been launched, house to house enquiries are being carried out and the property has been sealed off to enable officers to forensically examine the scene.
