Murder accused tells court he was 'framed'

A Victorian man accused of murdering his 78-year-old mother has told a court he was "set up". (AAP)

A Victorian man accused of killing his elderly mother has declared his innocence and told a court he has been "set up".

Thomas Bednar, 53, on Monday faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court, where he pleaded not guilty to murdering his 78-year-old mother, Judy Bednar, at Chelsea in May.

"I'm innocent," he told magistrate Tara Hartnett.

"It's a set-up and I plead not guilty because the case is very weak for the prosecution."

Bednar is expected to face the Victorian Supreme Court on October 20.
