Murder-accused given bail over neighbour's stabbing

The court heard of past animosity between the accused and his neighbour.

A man accused of fatally stabbing his neighbour at Tungkillo in the Adelaide Hills went outside with a knife when he noticed two men on his property late at night, a court has heard.

Darren Geoffrey Lorke, 52, was charged with murder after Kevin Skeyhill died from a single stab wound on September 13 in the driveway of a property on Adelaide Road.

The prosecution told Adelaide Magistrates Court Mr Lorke went outside about 10:30pm to investigate what was happening in his yard.

The court heard police received a phone call from Mr Lorke and he performed CPR on Mr Skeyhill until emergency crews arrived at the scene.

The prosecution said it was unclear precisely what had happened on the night, but there had been "some animosity" between the neighbours in the past.

Defence lawyer Stephen Law successfully argued for his client to be given home detention bail.

"He genuinely believed he was acting in a defensive purpose," he said.

The prosecution had opposed a release from custody because it claimed the accused was an "unpredictable man" who had previously admitted to drug use.

Mr Lorke will face court again in February.
