James Makir has faced Melbourne Magistrates Court charged with murder. (AAP)

A Melbourne man has faced court over a fatal stabbing near a fast food restaurant.

James Makir, 24, is charged with murder over the incident in Caroline Springs, in the city's west, on Monday night.

A 24-year-old Kurunjang man was injured during an alleged altercation shortly after 9pm and despite efforts by paramedics he died at the scene.

It's alleged the two men knew each other.

Makir, from Caroline Springs, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Tuesday afternoon.

His lawyer Sai Ranjit only asked that Makir be allowed to see a doctor or nurse soon.

Makir is due back in court on April 27.
