A new mural has been created near the late Eric Morecambe’s birthplace to mark 100 years since he was born.
The comedian was born in Morecambe, Lancashire, on May 14, 1926, and a series of events are being held in the town to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday.
The mural has been created on the side of the former Hitchens Building and features Morecambe alongside his comedy partner Ernie Wise, with the image inspired by a classic archive picture from a vintage Radio Times listing.
The pair’s comedy partnership lasted until Morecambe’s sudden death in 1984 at the age of 58. Wise lived until 1999.
Morecambe was originally called John Eric Bartholomew but he changed his name to adopt his hometown as his stage name.
The mural is part of the town’s wider Eric Morecambe 100 celebrations, which will also include performances of West End theatrical hit Eric & Ern at Morecambe’s Winter Gardens over the weekend.
The comedian’s son and daughter, Gary and Gail Morecambe, will be involved in a discussion about their father’s legacy on Saturday, while there will be guided walks around a new Eric Morecambe walking trail and a musical tribute from Morecambe Brass Band.
Further events and activities are expected to be added throughout the year.
David Waddington, chairman of Morecambe Business Improvement District, said: “This mural is a brilliant way to celebrate Eric’s 100th birthday and create something lasting for the town.
“Eric Morecambe remains an iconic figure not just locally, but nationally, and it feels right that we mark this milestone with a legacy project that residents and visitors can enjoy for years to come.
“It’s also a fantastic example of what can be achieved when local artists, businesses and the community come together to celebrate Morecambe’s heritage.”
Councillor Lee Bradbury, chairman of Morecambe Town Council’s festivals, sponsorships and events committee, said: “The Eric Morecambe 100 programme includes events and activities dreamed up by individuals and organisations from many different walks of Morecambe life, with the blessing of Eric Morecambe’s family.
“The enthusiasm and love for Eric and what he means to this town is clear to see – and the town council is proud to be supporting as many events and activities as possible, whether through direct funding or logistical support.
“We anticipate continuing to work with partners and building the programme throughout 2026. Eric will only be 100 once and we’ve got a whole year in which to continue the celebrations.”
