Munster star CJ Stander sends birthday message to his wife

CJ Stander has posted an emotional birthday message to his wife Jean-Marie.

The Munster star shared the message on Instagram, saying he couldn't wait to hold his other half and their daughter in his arms.

Stander, who will retire from playing at the end of the season, posted: "You inspire me. Happy birthday my love @jmstander.

"I know it is going to be a awesome day. Wish I could spend it with you and Everli. Cant wait to hold the two of you in my arms."

Stander married Jean-Marie Neethling in 2013, having met two years previously, and they became parents to Everli in 2019.

His family are currently in South Africa and Jean-Marie said she was missing her husband an "extra, extra amount" on her birthday.

She replied to his post: "Miss you every day, but missing you an extra extra amount this morning."

Stander paid tribute to his family after announcing his retirement last month, saying: "During the lockdown, I did a stocktake of what matters most to me in life.

"My faith, family and this incredible game I have played since I was six years old easily topped the list.

"However, I came to the realisation that my commitment to rugby has started to take an unfair toll on my family, who both in Limerick and South Africa have made considerable sacrifices for more than 25 years to allow me to live my dream.

"I am not saddened by my decision. I've had a full and utterly enjoyable rugby career, and I can now look back on a journey that has offered me rewards, memories and surprises beyond anything I could have scripted for myself."

Jean-Marie reacted to his retirement by saying: "So many moments that brought tears to my eyes, left me in awe, made my heart physically ache - far beyond what is expected from a game (let’s face it, it’s more than a game).

"The times were great, and the times were tough, but you stood steadfast & true to yourself. Hardworking, never flashy, passionate & mostly always smiling. I know you gave it your all, all the time.

"And that’s the way I will remember you as a rugby player! I stand by your decision to finish this chapter to start a new one. I can’t wait for our next adventure to start!"

Stander posted the message before helping Munster to a 27-3 win over Leinster at the RDS Arena on Saturday night.

It was the first time in seven games that Munster defeated their inter-pro rivals and their first win against them in Dublin since 2014.
