Munster get Captain's Run permission despite second positive Covid-19 test in squad

Munster have been given permission to go ahead with their Captain's Run tomorrow despite a second positive test in the squad.

The latest round of PCR testing carried out yesterday at the province's high performance centre in UL returned one positive test result and the player, who is asymptomatic, is already self-isolating.

The Reds have confirmed that the second positive test is a direct link to the first reported case from Tuesday, after which six players who were deemed close contacts were told to self-isolate.

Both players are being monitored and are well and, following consultation with public health authorities, the squad has been cleared to resume training after sessions on Tuesday and again today were cancelled.

Separately, an academy player who was on a down week and didn't attend the HPC this week has also tested positive after reporting symptoms.

Munster Rugby Head of Medical, Dr Jamie Kearns, said: “We have taken all necessary precautions this week by standing down squad training and carrying out a second round of testing.

“We are very grateful for the support from public health services and thankfully the processes we have in place help us mitigate the risk factor as we prioritise the health and safety of our players and staff.

“We look forward to resuming our training programme tomorrow (Friday)".
