Mumu's Mummy Land

Do you remember when you were a kid and the box your Christmas present came in was more fun than the present? There is something of that to this surreal show, in which 125 cardboard boxes are the real stars, not the four dancers.

The choreographer, Gilles Monnart, plays Boitman, supposedly a superhero who - with his three female dancers, or Boitgirls - inhabits a city made of cardboard boxes. It is like finding yourself inside a computer game as the boxes are configured into mazes and walls, streets and dead ends, columns and windows. The dancers play in these spaces like children, stalking and surprising each other.

It is clever and nutty, and does have a certain slapstick appeal. I suspect this is one of those idiosyncratic shows you either tune into wholeheartedly or just turn off and tune out. It feels too self-consciously odd and over the course of an hour it degenerates into a repetitive UV light show that owes more to pantomime. But I won't forget it in a hurry.
