Mums share their amazing home remedies for cradle cap they say will get rid of scabs forever

Mums have been sharing their amazing remedies for cradle cap - and some of them are simple.

One mum took to social media to plead for advice on how to get rid of the unsightly condition from her two-year-old daughter's head.

The mum said she used to use Dentinox shampoo which is used to treat the condition but due to panic buyers during lockdown, she was unable to source any for a few months and it led to the her daughter's conditioning worsening.

Posting on the Parenting on a Budget Facebook page, she said: "I’m wondering if anyone has any remedies that definitely work at getting rid of cradle cap?

"My little girl is almost 2 and she’s never had it as I’ve always used Dentinox shampoo and felt that it has kept it at bay.

"But since everyone was panic buying I couldn’t get hold of it for a good five months and now she’s got so much of it and her hair is so thin and blonde it looks awful.

"The Dentinox is now doing nothing for it. I’ve tried baby oil but it’s so thick its not doing anything."

Cradle cap is a harmless skin condition that causes patches of dry yellowish skin to form mainly on a baby's scalp, but can also appear on the eyebrows and around the nappy area.

Although it causes no pain or itching to the child, it can look unsightly.

The mum's post attracted scores of comments from fellow mothers all with their own home remedies on how to get rid of the condition.

From coconut and vegetable oil and one mum even said she used to liquid parafin - each remedy was unique and tried and tested.

One said: "Veggie oil, let it sit for 5 mins then massage in circles with a baby brush. Cleared within a week."

Another said: "Coconut oil plastered on my girls heads, leave for an hour and then use a comb to collect it all. Its so gross but so satisfying and works a treat! I do have to do it 2-3 times a year but I've never really liked the idea of using dentinox."

"Liquid paraffin. Warm it slightly and let it soak on her head for 5 or 10 mins. Then use a comb to pick it off and it wont come back," added another.

Some mums swore by a special comb normally used to treat head lice, saying nothing else works.

One said: "Nit comb, works a treat! Actually had to buy one just for that."

Another added: "My girls are 2 and 5, and nothing will shift it except a lot of oil and a nit comb, they're blonde too. A good wash after to get rid of any excess bits and the oil. Slowly but surely getting there."

"My son is 7 and daughter 5, both still get it. We lather coconut oil on the scalp areas then leave for 20-30 minutes. Then use a nit comb to basically scrape it out. Finally wash the oil out of the hair. We have to do this every 2-3 months to keep on top of it but it does get rid of it all," added another.

Another mum said dandruff shampoo was the answer: "I've been using head and shoulders. Not a very ethical brand I know, but its the only thing that works and my baby is now five."

Another said: "The chamomile balm from body shop brilliant for it. Used on my little boy and it cleared it up. Just rub some in then wash out."

"Get zerobase cream from doctors or buy it. Lather it in the scalp for an hour before bath and wash the hair with it don't use shampoo. 2 - 3 washes and it should go. Worked with my son and daughter," added another.

However the NHS advises that parents do not use adult shampoos on babies and children and avoid picking the crusts.

They advise that you wash your child's hair regularly with children's shampoo, and gently rub baby oil or vegetable oil in to the scalp.
