Mums left terrified after spotting viral 'dilation pumpkins' post by midwives

It's normal to feel a little spooked this time of year, but mums everywhere are experiencing a shudder of terror thanks to a range of unusual pumpkins.

The 10 pumpkins were carved out by a group of midwives at the Royal Oldham Hospital a few years ago, however the picture of them has been re-shared as we get closer to Halloween - and it's giving some women the creeps.

The 10 'dilation pumpkins' all have different sized mouths, ranging from 1cm wide to 10cm wide, in order to show just how dilated women in labour become before giving birth, the Manchester Evening News reports.

The pumpkins went viral when they first surfaced, but have recently become popular online once more, after being shared by Dr Lindsey Fitzharris, who is a medical historian at the University of Oxford.

"A few years ago, midwives at the Royal Oldham Hospital in Lancashire created 'dilation pumpkins' - and I don't think I've ever seen anything scarier in my life," she wrote on Twitter, alongside a picture of the pumpkins.

In the Tweet, which now has more than 10,000 likes, she also apologised to "anyone who is pregnant" with a crying-laughing face.

After her tweet was posted other people chimed on to give their views with some saying they were 'terrifying'.

One mum said: "OMG, I've had two children, but those pumpkins are so terrifying.

Another said: "How fantastic are women's bodies that they can cope with this without anaesthetic?"

One user, however, said that the pumpkin's faces aren't terrifying enough for what she went through.

The mum said: "23 years ago I went from two to 10 centimetres in 45 minutes, without anaesthetic. Those pumpkins don't look nearly terrified enough."
