Mummenschanz 3X11

If you want to be entertained by a fluorescent pulsating red blob, or a giant yellow slinky or a human Liquorice Allsort, then this is undoubtedly the show for you.

Long before object animation became fashionable in the theatre, Mummenschanz were entertaining audiences with their unique form of visual theatre. Three decades on, their playful shows still work a kind of weird magic, as if it's the most normal thing in the world to spend the afternoon in the dark (and complete silence) watching someone pretending to be a squiggle, or seeing an apparently flat white sheet floating across the stage all on its own.

Part of the pleasure of this strange hour is that it is so low-tech and so brilliantly effective, owing as much to 19th-century theatre traditions as to any modern practice.

The show is often quite witty in the way objects take on human characteristics, bopping each other like crazed Sumo wrestlers or getting tangled up. It's always cute, sometimes even rather beautiful. But in the end I had no idea what it was for.
