After being confirmed on the bill at this year’s Reading and Leeds festivals in August, Mumford & Sons have revealed details of their third album, Wilder Mind.

The album is due out on 4 May, through Island Records and the band’s imprint Gentlemen of the Road, and was produced by Simian Mobile Disco’s James Ford, who has racked up past production credits for Arctic Monkeys, Haim and Jessie Ware.

Mumford & Sons recorded Wilder Mind in London’s Air Studios, after writing some of the album’s 12 songs in Brooklyn with the National’s Aaron Dessner. The album will feature the band exploring new sonic territory beyond their well-tread and banjo-heavy past material.

“Demoing with Aaron meant that, when we took a break, we knew it wasn’t going to involve acoustic instruments,” said Marcus Mumford, the band’s frontman, in a statement. “We didn’t say: ‘No acoustic instruments.’ But I think all of us had this desire to shake it up.”

Mumford & Sons have also announced location details and the lineup for their roaming Gentlemen of the Road festival. Founded in 2012, the event is this year heading to five locations, and UK fans will be pleased to hear that the festival will swing through Aviemore, Scotland, as well as four US cities. Tickets will be available online from Friday 6 March.
