Mumbles Pier will be temporarily reopened on Saturday

The historic Mumbles Pier will be reopening temporarily tomorrow to allow the people of Swansea to enjoy one of the city's most recognisable landmarks during the summer months.

The pier is currently undergoing extensive restoration works, and phase one of the refurbishment is now complete.

It means it can be temporarily re-opened to the public.

It will officially re-open on Saturday, June 29 from 10am, and Toby the Mumbles Pier Bear will be there for the moment.

The RNLI Mumbles Lifeboat will also have their first public launch and training exercise from 10.30am.

General manager of Mumbles Pier, Hannah Hunter, said: “Our amazing team here at Mumbles Pier are excited to announce the temporary opening of our historic pier for the summer whilst restoration works continue.

"Our construction crews have been working tirelessly to restore our pier which is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the area."

Visitors will be able to walk along the pier and enjoy the magnificent views of the bay  and also visit the new RNLI Lifeboat House and shop, whilst its two platforms will also be open for fishing.

Refurbishment work will resume around September along with construction of a new foreshore boardwalk.

Having been a part of Swansea since 1898, the historic landmark has been an attraction for tourists and locals alike for over a century.

The work is part of a £3.2m project which has seen part of the Swansea Bay landmark demolished, with construction workers previously removing period Victorian features for storage and refurbishment, a job set to be completed by the end of the year.

The original supporting columns for the pier will remain in place as they are considered still up to the job.
