MUMBAI: With their only clue being a pair of legs captured on surveillance cameras, the Dahisar police managed to track down two habitual criminals who had looted an apartment of Rs 30 lakh. The duo, Anant Kamble and Dnyaneshwar Bangre, have 26 past offences registered against them, largely in Navi Mumbai and Raigad.
On April 20, a Dahisar based family had stepped out of their home at Shrikrishna apartments for four hours. When they returned, they were aghast to find the door lock smashed and gold and silver ornaments missing. The society does not have any cameras installed. Police checked footage from cameras installed in nine societies in the neighbourhood for four days and dug out call records.
"The accused had kept a watch on the apartment" said DCP Somnath Gharge. In one of the CCTV grabs, police found that one of the accused picked up the other from Dahisar West and they were commuting on a bike. "The images weren't clear. Most CCTV grabs were of a pair of legs," said an officer.
Police further checked camera footage from 78 locations in Mumbai and Thane before arresting the duo recently.
Kamble and Bangre would only strike at societies having no cameras or security guard. The duo lived in Raigad and travelled to Mumbai for burglaries.
Police recovered stolen valuables worth Rs 12 lakh from them.
