MUMBAI: The city witnessed an overall drop of around 30 megawatts (MW) of electricity between 8.30pm and 9.30pm in view of the Earth Hour observed by the citizens on Saturday.
The Earth Hour was observed worldwide, with people switching off non-essential electric lights for an hour to raise awareness about energy conservation.
Every year, the Earth Hour is observed on the last Saturday in March.
An official from Tata Power said that in case of their distribution areas, there was a drop of 9MW in Mumbai.
"We have saved that much power for tonight," the official said, adding that the total power demand in Mumbai on Saturday night was around 2,750 MW.
According to sources, power being switched off voluntarily in parts of the city did not affect the system or grid and the supply thereafter was uninterrupted.
Earth Hour aims to spark global conversations on protecting nature, tackling the climate crisis, and working together to shape a brighter future for all citizens.
