Mumbai rains: When will it stop? Here's what IMD forecast says

Heavy rainfall continued to disrupt normal life in Mumbai, India's financial capital, on Monday with several low-lying areas witnessed waterlogging, while traffic movement on the Mumbai-Goa Highway was severely affected due to flooding in parts of Raigad. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Mumbai, Thane and Raigad districts. The IMD warned that intense rainfall could inundate low-lying and urban areas, trigger flash floods and river flooding in some catchments, and cause water to flow over roads and bridges. It also cautioned that strong winds could uproot weak trees, while old and poorly maintained structures may collapse. Landslides, mudslides and rockfalls are also possible in vulnerable areas.

According to the weather department, rough sea conditions and squally weather are likely along the Konkan coast. Road, rail, air and ferry services may face disruptions, while essential civic services such as water and electricity supply could also be affected.

The IMD further warned that strong winds and heavy rain may damage plantations, horticulture and standing crops, besides causing minor damage to kutcha houses, walls and huts. It also cautioned against cloud-to-ground lightning during thunderstorm activity.

Commuters have been advised to check traffic conditions before travelling and follow official traffic advisories. Residents have also been urged to avoid staying in vulnerable structures, refrain from working in open areas during thunderstorms and avoid taking shelter under tall trees or isolated structures.
