Mumbai: Mankhurd traffic bottleneck to end

MUMBAI: A major bottleneck on the Sion-Panvel highway near Mankhurd will be a thing of the past within a year as Maharail has undertaken widening of the Mankhurd road over bridge (ROB).

Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation also known as MahaRail is entrusted with responsibility of constructing ROBs across Maharashtra by the state Public Works Department (PWD). This ROB is between Mankhurd and Govandi stations below which run the CSMT-Panvel Harbour line tracks. A Maharail spokesperson said, “The widening of the road over bridge is underway at a fast pace as we have planned to open the revamped ROB by the middle of 2023.”

At present, the ROB has 3+3 lanes. The length of the left hand side arm is 480m and that of the right hand side arm is 510m and there will be two additional lanes each on both sides. The spokesperson said, “Once it’s completed, the ROB will have 8 lanes as against existing 6 lanes.” Sion-Panvel highway connects Maharashtra to Andhra, Karnataka and Goa. It is also a crucial link for the traffic coming from Mumbai-Pune Expressway, JNPT Road and Old Pune Highway. —ManthanK Mehta
