Mumbai: Man sentenced to one year in jail for forcibly kissing woman

MUMBAI: A 37-year-old man was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for a year in connection with a seven-year-old case in which he had forcibly kissed a woman commuter at CSMT.

The woman had pressed charges of sexual harassment against him then.

Metropolitan magistrate VP Kedar also ordered the accused, Kiran Honawar, to pay a fine of Rs 10,000.

The incident dates back to August 26, 2015. The woman commuter and her male friend were travelling from Govandi station to CSMT on a Central Railway local. They got off at platform number 1 of CSMT. At that time, Honawar went near the woman and kissed her on her cheek. The woman was taken aback and reported the incident to the CSMT GRP. Honawar, a resident of Panjim in Goa, was taken into custody and charged under Section 354 (A) (1) of the IPC.

The trial was conducted before the 35th magistrate court at CSMT. "The conviction should send across a strong message that crimes against women will not be tolerated," said Memboob Inamdar, senior inspector, CSMT GRP.

(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
