MUMBAI: The Mumbai crime branch on Saturday arrested a 30-year-old man within 12 hours after he stabbed a 29-year-old man to death at the Mankhurd railway station’s platform.
The arrested accused, Ramzan Pathan alias Pappu, a Navi Mumbai resident, has been handed over to the Vashi railway police where the murder case was registered. The accused and victim, Deepak Hiray, both had alighted from the luggage compartment of a local train at Mankhurd railway station.
"The motive behind the murder is robbery. Pappu had during his attempt for robbery, pulled out a sharp object and stabbed Hiray, a Chembur resident. The victim was rushed to hospital where he was declared dead," said a crime branch officer.
With no clue, the crime branch began a probe and found it difficult to get clues; the CCTV images were also not clear. While the cops were working on the case, a police head constable Nitin Sawant of the crime branch got information that the accused was in Khargar, Navi Mumbai.
A team led by inspector Ravindra Salunkhe arrived there and picked up Pappu. During primary interrogation, police learnt there were several previous criminal cases registered against Pappu including molestation, rioting, theft and criminal intimidation at various police stations.
The investigation was supervised by Milind Bharambe, joint commissioner of crime branch, Addl CP Veeresh Prabhu, DCP (Crime) Neelotpal and staff.
