MCA to consider request for pension for widows of Mankad, Dalvi today

The Mumbai Cricket Association will consider a request for pension for the widows of former Mumbai cricketers Rahul Mankad and Madhav Dalvi in its Apex Council meeting on Thursday.

Former Mumbai captain and chief selector Milind Rege has urged the MCA to provide Rahul Mankad's widow with pension. Rahul, who passed away in London on March 30 this year at the age of 66, was the youngest son of legendary cricketer Vinoo Mankad. He scored 2,111 runs in 47 games between 1972-73 and 1984-85, averaging 35.77 with five tons and 12 fifties.

Dalvi, who passed away in 2012, played for Mumbai and Vidarbha between 1947 and 1962, and averaged 48.03 in 27 matches. He had achieved the unique feat of scoring centuries both on his debut and the last match of his first-class career. At one time, he scored three consecutive centuries for Bombay A road accident brought a premature end to his career in 1962.

"We have received an email dated 23rd August from Anjali Gadkari requesting to provide a pension for his widow. It's been listed in the agenda of the meeting," a source in MCA told TOI.

On July 28, in response to Rege's request to grant pension to his widowed sister-Pushpa Diwadkar (wife of former Mumbai spinner Sharad Diwadkar) and the wives of late cricketers Ajit Naik and Ranjan Baindoor, the MCA decided to grant widows of ex-Mumbai cricketers who are 70-plus, a pension of Rs 20,000 per month from August 1. The widows of ex-cricketers below 70 will receive Rs 10,000 per month.

"I'm requesting the MCA to provide pension to the widows of all former Mumbai First Class cricketers," Rege told this paper.
