MUMBAI: The city recorded 65% of its average August rain in the first 12 days. Till Friday, rainfall recorded was 365mm. Total rainfall required for the month is 560mm. Most of the 365mm was received throughout last week. Rain recorded on August 8-9 (ending at 8.30am) was 124mm. However, this is the only period when the month recorded triple digit rain. Thereafter, while rain has been consistent, no heavy rain figures were recorded.
IMD said rainfall recorded in a 24-hour period when it falls between 64.5mm-115.5mm is categorized as heavy rain. Rainfall recorded in the 24 hours ending 8.30am on August 12 by IMD Santacruz observatory was 30.4mm. This falls in the moderate category (15.6mm up to 64.4mm).
On Friday, cloudy skies with moderate rain were observed in the city and suburbs. This was coupled with occasional strong wind having a speed 40-50kmph and reaching to 60kmph. IMD said the weather system was giving Mumbai these rains include a well-marked low pressure area. "This well marked low pressure area over northeast Arabian sea and adjoining coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch and southeast Pakistan concentrated into a depression over northeast Arabian sea as on Friday," said IMD.
