Mumbai: Duo ‘stole’ Rs 4 crore diamond after business loss

MUMBAI: Two diamond market brokers arrested recently for allegedly making away with three diamonds of 18.17 karat worth Rs 3.5 crore on July 4 have claimed they planned the theft due to financial problems at home, the police.

The brokers, Bharat Kandol (39) from Gujarat and Amrutlal Patel (59) from Goregaon, said that the diamond business was bad due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak for two years and the Russia-Ukraine crisis further worsened and they failed to earn a commission with no parties coming for a deal.

Patel posed as a merchant from Dubai for a 20% share of what they would earn on sale, the police said. They were arrested last week and the diamonds recovered while the cops are looking for their aide, Kaushik Chauwatia, from Gujarat.
