Mumbai: Doctors save youth after fence spikes pierce chest

MUMBAI: Doctors at Bandra's KB Bhabha Hospital saved the life of a 22-year-old worker who suffered a critical injury after spikes of a fence pierced through his chest after a fall from a tree. The object stopped short of hitting his lungs.

He climbed a tree to carry out work in Bandra on July 26. Dr Vidya Thakur, chief medical superintendent of the peripheral hospital, said that he lost his balance. A pointed arrow on the fence penetrated his chest and stayed inside.

The fall broke his ankle. Dr Thakur said he was brought to hospital in a pool of blood around 9.30am "Doctors found that the steel rod had not damaged his lungs, but a rib was broken," she said. Doctors Vinod Khade, Amit Desai and Shraddha Mone decided to perform a surgery immediately. After an hour-long procedure, the object was removed. The doctors inserted an interc-oastal tube to avoid internal bleeding near his lungs and heart.

Medical superintendent Dr Sanjay Patil said the patient was later discharged and advised rest for two weeks.
