Mumbai: Days after opening, Borivli flyover’s surface ‘wears out’

MUMBAI: Less than a week after it was inaugurated, the flyover in Kora Kendra area of Borivli from Link Road connecting up to Western Express Highway (WEH) has run into problems.

Several social media users have pointed out that the flyover has already started giving way with gravel coming off its surface. A Twitter handle @CharkopWarriors tweeted, “Check the condition of surface of road over Kora Kendra flyover built over RM BHATTAD road Borivali W. Within 3 days of opening to vehicular traffic the surface Tar has gone wearing out. Potholes will surely be seen within week. Thank you.”

A video was also posted by the handle wherein doubts are raised over the construction quality and on its condition deteriorating in no time after the flyover inauguration. The person in the video can also be heard saying that in a few days, the big potholes could surface on the bridge.

The BMC, however, clarified that the road had not given way and what could be seen coming off was anti- skid layers that were placed. “The fine stones from these are coming off which are layers that were put to make the surface friction resistant. Despite the monsoon, the bridge has not seen any untoward condition. Whatever fine stones are coming out too are being sucked out,” said Satish Thosar, chief engineer of the BMC bridges department. When asked why weren’t these works undertaken before inauguration, he said that loose particles would come off only once the traffic starts moving. The 937-metre flyover, inaugurated by cabinet minister Aaditya Thackeray over the last weekend consist of 2+2 lanes.
