MUMBAI: Seven years after a 28-year-old commercial sex worker was murdered by her regular customer, a bank employee, a sessions court on Thursday convicted the 45-year-old man and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
The accused, Kumaran Konar, has been in jail since his arrest in April 2015.
Judge B V Wagh found the accused guilty of murder and also fined him Rs 1,500.
Public prosecutor Ratnavali Patil cited the deposition of 12 witnesses to seek the conviction of the accused.
Among the witnesses was a woman, Pinki Shaikh, who knew the victim, Kajal alias Rafiza Khan. Pinki had told the police after the murder that the accused was angry with Kajal as she had fallen in love with another man.
The murder had taken place on March 31, 2015, at Kamathipura, the red light area of the city. Pinki said that at night when Kajal, she ans some others were waiting for customers, the accused had come to the spot and caught the victim by her hair. She said the man had inflicted knife blows on her neck.
After the police were called, Kajal was taken to hospital but could not be saved. The accused was arrested.
