Mumbai: 3 Navy men arrested after they thrash civilians in Fort

MUMBAI: The MRA Marg police late Wednesday arrested three Navy sailors for allegedly battering three civilians in Fort after they objected to their consuming alcohol in the open. While the locals and the police could manage to nab the three sailors, two to three others fled.

Rajendra Patil (50), a Fort resident lodged an FIR with the police against the Navy sailors. Following which, accused Shivam Purohit, Nitin Singh and Surendra Elavat, were arrested. All three are residents of Naval Dockyard in Colaba. The accused were booked for voluntarily causing hurt, rioting, etc.

The complainant told the police that he was at his friend’s paan-beedi shop when he and his friends saw five to six Navy personnel drinking alcohol on footpath.

Patil said that when he and his friends, Sham Shinde and Deepak Sulare, requested them to not drink in open, at first they left, but, later, four to five Navy personnel returned to the spot, ransacked the paan-beedi stall and battered its owner, Abhishek Kambli.

Patil added that his friend Shinde intervened but the accused beat him up too. He said that he was also pushed and beaten up by the accused.

Meanwhile, police beat marshals arrived on the spot near Hansraj Damodar building in Fort. While some of the accused fled, the locals and police nabbed the three sailors.

“The three persons were produced before a court and sent to judicial custody,” said Rajesh Pawar, senior inspector, MRA Marg police station.

The medical reports of all the three accused are yet to come.
